From I-29, take the 13th Avenue South exit and head west about half a mile. We’re on the south side between 44th and 45th Street, the low brick building with the red EMERGENCY sign lit all night.

NO SURPRISES
Written estimates before treatment.
We stabilize what cannot wait. Then the doctor explains what they found and gives you a written low-to-high estimate before further treatment starts.

Your family vet gets everything.
We ask for your family vet at check-in. When your pet goes home, they receive the full record, including the exam, lab results, x-ray images, medications, and home-care instructions, by 8:00am the next business day, usually sooner.
If your pet stays with us, our doctor calls during office hours. Rechecks and stitches out happen with your family vet, not here. No family vet? We will give you a list of nearby clinics taking new patients.

What’s in the building.
Everything here has one job: help a dog or cat who cannot wait.
Emergency surgery
A dedicated surgery suite for urgent operations.
Intensive care
Oxygen kennels and continuous overnight monitoring.
Fast answers
In-house blood results in about 20 minutes, plus digital x-ray and ultrasound.
Transfusion support
Blood transfusions when a pet needs them most.
Here all night
A doctor and at least two nurses in the building every hour.
WHY WE OPENED
“The Red River Valley needed a doctor in the building at every hour.”
Dr. Solveig Brandvold, DVM, DACVECC, is board certified in emergency and critical care. After nine years on overnight shifts in Minneapolis, she opened Lanternfield in 2019 to make that promise real here.

FROM FAMILIES WE’VE HELPED
What it felt like to be here.
“I called from the car crossing the river from Moorhead. They met us at the door with a stretcher, and our lab was in surgery for bloat forty minutes later.”
Brent O., Moorhead
“We waited three hours with a cat with a cut paw, and I was annoyed until a nurse told me the dog who came in after us had been hit by a car. Fair enough.”
Lisa K., West Fargo
“They gave us two estimates and never made us feel bad for choosing the smaller one. Our regular vet had the x-rays before we woke up.”
Jared and Amy S., Horace
